CEADs Update: Tianyang Lei Selected for IIASA 2022 Young Scientists Summer Program
Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis announced the official admission results for the 2022 Young Scientists Summer Program (IIASA-YSSP). Tianyang Lei, a PhD student at Tsinghua University and a member of the CEADs team, has been selected for the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis 2022 Young Scientists Summer Program. He will travel to IIASA in Laxenburg, near Vienna, Austria, to conduct collaborative research with the Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program.
IIASA-YSSP
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), headquartered in Laxenburg, Austria, is an interdisciplinary, neutral, non-governmental, and non-profit international research organization with a strong reputation in the global academic community. It is a major contributor to important reports such as those of the IPCC, and its research has substantial influence on decision-making by international organizations and national governments. Its work on new energy has been recognized by countries, including China, that are actively advancing new energy development. Founded in 1972, IIASA aims to connect and organize scientists and scholars worldwide to carry out policy-oriented research and address complex problems that cannot be solved independently by a single country or discipline, especially global challenges such as climate change that require international cooperation. IIASA currently has member countries across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe. With approval from the State Council, the National Natural Science Foundation of China formally joined IIASA on behalf of China in January 2002. The ECE Program is one of IIASA's six research programs. It aims to provide robust and reliable scientific roadmaps for feasible systems transitions while meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change mitigation goals.
Laxenburg is located about 15 kilometers south of Vienna. Once a medieval hunting ground, it was later developed into one of Europe's most beautiful English-style gardens and is a renowned royal park in Austria. Princess Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary spent happy times in Laxenburg.
Every summer, IIASA selects about 50 outstanding doctoral students from around the world to participate in the Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP), visiting IIASA headquarters in Austria for three months of study and research. CEADs members Jiamin Qu, who was selected in 2018 and received the Mikhalevich Scholar Award, Daoping Wang in 2020, Qiang Zhang and Dabo Guan in 2004, and Klaus Hubacek in 2000 have all participated in the YSSP. This year's YSSP received 2,016 applications, with five Chinese students selected. The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) will provide funding support.
IIASA's Young Scientists Summer Program accepts applications worldwide from October to January each year. Eligible doctoral students can submit applications through the IIASA website. More information about the IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program is available at:

Profile of the Selected Participant

Tianyang Lei
Tianyang Lei is a third-year direct-entry PhD student in the Department of Earth System Science at Tsinghua University, supervised by Professor Dabo Guan. His research focuses on compiling global carbon emission inventories for key industrial point sources and analyzing future mitigation pathways. His lead-authored study on carbon emissions accounting for global oil refineries, "Adaptive CO2 emissions mitigation strategies of global oil refineries in all age groups," was published in the journal One Earth. During the Young Scientists Summer Program, his work will focus on the development and application of point-source emissions data for global oil and gas fields.
