On October 26, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research held the 2020 Green Talents Award ceremony online, honoring 25 outstanding young researchers from around the world for their important contributions to sustainable development. CEADs team member Dr. Jiamin Ou received the award.

Jiamin Ou is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. She previously studied at the University of East Anglia, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and South China University of Technology. Her research focuses on accounting for pollutant emissions from human activities and on sustainable development from both consumption and production perspectives. She has published more than 20 papers in leading journals including Joule, Nature Communications, Nature Sustainability, Environmental Science & Technology and Applied Energy.

The Green Talents jury highly commended Dr. Jiamin Ou for her pioneering research on sustainable production and consumption, especially her use of interdisciplinary models and knowledge to offer new insights into the causes and governance of air pollution. The Green Talents Award, supported by the German Federal Minister of Education and Research, was launched in 2009. This year focused on several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The award recognizes young researchers with outstanding research contributions in sustainable development. In the 2020 selection, a senior expert jury chose 25 promising researchers from more than 600 applicants representing over 100 countries.

From October 12 to 26, this year awardees took part in two weeks of online scientific discussion and exchange. They connected with researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the University of Hamburg, and my Boo, a bicycle producer in the field of sustainability, laying a foundation for future collaboration. In 2021, they will also be invited to return to Germany to conduct fully funded research projects at research institutions of their choice.

CEADs Team Members Have Received This Honor Multiple Times

The CEADs team has long been committed to studying the causes, impacts and responses to climate change, analyzing the drivers of greenhouse gas emissions, and exploring sustainable development pathways for low-carbon and low-resource consumption at global and national scales. The team research achievements, which integrate natural and social sciences across multiple fields, have been widely recognized by the academic community.

After Dr. Zhu Liu and Dr. Yuli Shan received the award in 2016 and 2018 respectively, Jiamin Ou became the third CEADs team member to win Germany Green Talents Award. This award once again recognizes the outstanding contributions made by CEADs team members in interdisciplinary sustainable development, and encourages young scholars to continue advancing interdisciplinary research.
